What Needs to Change?

If you want things to change, you’re going to have to change some things…

This seems like a very logical statement, but how often do you actually think about what you need to change in order to get the results you want in life?

It’s amazing how often I find myself doing the same things over and over again expecting a different result. As we all have probably heard, that’s the definition of insanity. And though I know this on a rational level, the belief that things will eventually get better without me changing anything can still sneak into my subconscious–and most of the time, I don’t even realize it.

I still remember looking over our finances and budget over a year ago and the thought occurred to me like an epiphany: what’s going to change if I don’t change anything? How am I going to move my family closer to our financial goals continuing on the same path with the same spending habits?

More recently as I reflected on my fitness goals, I came to the same realization. I made some changes a couple years ago in my diet and fitness regimen that got me to where I am now, and though I am pleased with my progress, I’m going to have to make some new changes to get me the rest of the way.

So if you’ve been stuck in a rut and want to see some growth this coming year, ask yourself the following questions:

1. In what area of my life do I really want to see growth?
2. What do I need to change in order to achieve that growth?
3. Is there something I’m doing now that I think is beneficial, but in reality has become a hinderance?

For example, in terms of health–is there something you’re eating or drinking that you think is healthy, but really isn’t?

Lastly, remember the 80/20 Principle and apply it to your progress. 20% of your effort is going to get you 80% of the way there. The last 80% of your effort will get you the last 20% of they way.

So recognize that you will need to adjust what you do over time. As you change and adapt, your strategy may become less effective and might require you to switch things up to keep moving forward.

Here’s to a year of growth!
