I’m sure we’ve all heard the quote, “You can please some of the people all the time, all of the people some of the time, but you can never please all the people all the time.”
The reality is that when you are moving forward in life, there is always going to be someone to criticize you. I’ve heard it joked that most people don’t mind you getting ahead in life as long as you don’t ahead of them! I think this is true. How do you feel when your neighbor gets a new car, or friends build a bigger and nicer home than you have, or someone else gets promoted at work? If I’m totally honest, I usually feel a bit of envy and I have to remind myself to be happy for them.
So don’t be surprised when people criticize you for trying to improve your position in life. Some of them may even have the best intentions–maybe they’re afraid you’ll get hurt if you fail. Nevertheless, when you’re trying to eat right or start a new exercise program, or give up a bad habit, or are applying for a different job or starting a business, you need to stick to doing what you feel is the right thing to do.
But also realize that inevitably, in the process, there will be something that won’t go to plan, and in the face of those challenges, you will be tempted to doubt yourself and it may seem like your critics were right. And you may think to yourself, “maybe I shouldn’t have started,” or “maybe I’m not cut out for this.” But in the those moments, you need to remind yourself WHY you are doing it and persevere and find a way through.
The most successful people in life are those who are criticized the most. Just turn on CNN or ESPN or read movie reviews and you’ll see what I mean. If you want to be successful, criticism is one of the prices to be paid. In some cases, it may be good to determine if there is any truth in it and use it to get better, but in most cases, it’s just noise to distract you from accomplishing your goals and you just need to ignore it.
If anything, your attempts to improve yourself is making others feel uncomfortable in their mediocrity and their criticism is nothing more than an attempt to pull you back down to make themselves feel better. In that case, just keep doing what you’re doing and succeed anyway.
